Walking.......Lancashire!!

I snuck over the border at Tosside, the guards were fat and sleepy on an overdose of Eccles Cakes, drove to Cocklet Hill car park (745550) and set off for a good sunny day's walking.

Down the hill to the little chapel of St. James, Stocks In Bowland, turn left onto the track and followed that to Black House (729549), Hammerton Hall (718537) and thence to Slaidburn.

The bridge over Croasdale Brook at Slaidburn. From here Itook Quiet Lane to the North and then onto the footpaths following Croasdale Brook to Croasdale House (703550).

It was here, in the fields above Slaidburn, that I stumbled across Lancashire's secret war plans, a bunker, semi-concealed near a copse. They're obviously getting ready in case we unleash the Halifax Bombers againt 'em.

The interior of the bunker, complete with mini stalactites.

A stand of trees on the hill left of Quiet Lane, Slaidburn. I pressed on through the fields of bleating sheep and lambs and rejoined the road just North of Harker's Farm (708557).

I'm not a number, I'm a free sheep. I followed the road North to the picturesque sounding Cross of Greet bridge, and then perched on a wall in the sun to eat my packed lunch. Two girls in small white car come bombing down the hill, on a perfectly strait road she manages to veer off to one side and for a moment I think I'm about to witness a nasty accident, at the last moment though she gets back onto the road, misses the bridge end by a hand's width and roars off up the hill. Lucky there were no other cars around, she came off the road on the right hand side.

Cross of Greet bridge (703589) with handy picnic wall.

The rather splendid view of Catlow Fell from my picnic spot, with chav skid pan in foreground.

The RAF organised an official flypast in honour of my visit, can't tell you what the aeroplane is, and I was still fumbling to get the camera out of it's pouch when the jet fighters streaked by.

Bowland Knotts (727607), I went up to the trig point on the most Westerly of the Knotts, then back to the road where I had my second chav encounter of the day.

Just before I got back to the road two tracksuit clad, basball capped youths appeared in front of me, their brief conversation went like this.....
"Fucking hell Colin you cunt, what 'av you brought us 'ere fo ? There's fuck all 'ere, let's fuck off."
They vanished in a Renault Clio with blacked out windows, note to all scutters, please stay in your shopping centres and bowling alleys, you won't like it in the country, there's nowt to do, and you annoy those of us who do appreciate it.

Weathered rocks at Bowland Knotts.

Well, time is getting on, my legs are starting to ache, so it's back down the road, down Crutchenber Fell, through Gisburn Forest and back to the car.

Spring leaves in the sunshine inside Gisburn forest.

Pretty flowers growing on a mossy wall top.

This walk was a fraction under 25 kilometres / 15.5 miles and took 6 hours with numerous stops to take piccies, watch jet fighters, avoid chavs etc. Map used was OS Explorer OL41 Forest of Bowland & Ribblesdale.
