Walking Yorkshire, Grimwith Reservoir, Trollers Gill Overground, underground, wandering free, if you know the area this will make perfect sense, if not, I'll explain later. Home turf for this walk, just a few miles from home. It looks a bit bleak this morning, there's a fair wind up again creating little white waves out on the reservoir. That's Grimwith House on the east of the reservoir, unnocupied and now a wildlife sanctuary. I parked at the very nice car park provided by Yorkshire Water (complete with proper toilets and picnic benches)at the southern side of the water (064641) and set off along the dam (Toothill Ridge) westwards. The water pumping station on Toothill Ridge. When I reach the NW corner of the reservoir there is a barbed wire fence with a Yorkshire Water sign saying "NO Public Access." This means you shouldn't climb over it, on my map though it looks like an interestng steep valley with, hopefully, a pretty waterfall. OK kids, look left, look right, no wardens in sight, cup your nuts gently and step over the barbed wire. It's rocky, and pretty. The going isn't actually as rough as it looks, there are game bird breeding pens up here and the keepers have built little foot bridges back and forth over the gill, there is a little bit of scrambling required just before the waterfall. Right, to get the second view you'll have to get strait up the crags, one of those bits where the contour lines blur together. It was very steep, rocky, loose and wet, and remember, you're not allowed up here. Half way up I decided I had to continue climbing because I was too scared to attempt the descent. Back to the edge of the reservoir then, and what's this ? Another sign denying access to the public. A 'Fixer Upper,' Mine buildings at Gate Up Gill (055665). Probably because they don't want you to fall down this mine shaft further up the path. I stopped for lunch on the banks of Gate Up Gill under Great Wolfrey Crag (063673), not a soul in sight, they've obviously paid attention to the 'No Entry' signs. Back down to Grimwith Reservoir, I was planning to go through a third "No Access" sign and walk up the shooting road to Sikes Dike, but the rangers are working above the barn here so I stroll nanchanently past and strike out across the fields eastwards. Just before coming out onto the road again I spied these Dandelions in the rocks at Nursery Knott (081637). On the road, and I'm a couple of hundred yards away from Stump Cross Caverns, I havn't been there for years, so I decided to call in. Underground photo's next time.
