Film Review : A Tale Of Two Sisters **** I get full value from horror movies, I don't sit there all calm and unperturbed, I jump, I twitch, I suffer from all manner of fright induced physical jitters, I breath in suddenly in horror, I yelp, and then Mrs YS turns to me and says "This is the last time we're watching a horror movies at the cinema, you're embarrassing." So I borrowed this one from waitress Carol and watched at home. The one horror film that frightened me the most was The Blair Witch Project, you never see any real violence, blood and gore, evil killers with large knives or monsters with large teeth, but the film succeeds entirely in putting a large amount of tension and creeping fear into you, and that is exactly what director Ji-Woon Kim has managed to do with Two Sisters. The film starts with two young sisters returning to the family home some time after the death of their mother, they have both spent time in a mental institution but upon returning home they find life isn't so easy to cope with on the outside. Su-Jeong Lim and Jung-ah Yum turn in good performances as the stepmother and older sister respectively, the parts of the father and younger daughter were rather underplayed though. The main problem with foreign language films, and this is a fault with the viewer not the film, is that in not understanding the language you tend to miss the more subtle nuances that the actors and director are trying to put across. The horror element in Two sisters is spooky, supernatural, or is it only in the minds of the people in the house ? Is there a burned and twisted little child hiding under the kitchen cabinets ? Whose hand pushes the bedroom door open ? What the bloody hell was that ? This is a film that doesn't let you know what is happening until the very end, and even then I have questions, did these events actually happen, was it a dream, were parts of it a dream ? I do like a film that makes you think, as well as one that has you hiding behind the settee. I don't want to say much more, I really enjoyed the film, having to watch for the sub-titles really concentrates the mind and ensures a good level of off the sofa leaping when something nasty happens. Interesting, intriguing, very frightening, I must ask Carol though, what really happens when..............?
